The ADM and Jr. Pioneers
Changes to Bantam and Midget Skill SessionsJust before the season ended last year, USA Hockey came out with a the American Development Model. The reason for this guide was to introduce players to a better way to train and grow as a hockey player. The CCYHL (our league), Colorado Armature Hockey Association (CAHA), and our program the Jr. Pioneers adopted this program. The league spent many hours trying developing a model that would work the best for all programs and players involved. The goal was to adopt guidelines that would develop our players and bring them to the peak of their potential, and still merge with the ideals set forth by USA Hockey.

We are all focusing on more skill development and less system development, there is also a large off ice component. USA Hockey has asked for more players on the ice at a time, more half ice practices, and a required number of touches on the ice prescribed by USA Hockey. The reasons for the changes with in our program so far this season are simply results of the ADM and its recommendations. The University of Denver and the Jr. Pioneers have been “pioneers” in adopting the ADM. We have stuck with the ADM at many of the levels recommended by USA Hockey.
In a meeting on October 16th, the decision to change how the ADM is implemented in the Jr. Pioneer program was made for the remainder of the 2009-10 season and was based on the recommendations of Graham Johnson. This decision was made with full consensus of the group that consisted of these individuals:
-Stuart Halsall, Assistant Vice Chancellor
-Tiffany Ulatowski, Director of Membership & Programming
-Matt Gohl, Director of Ritchie Center Operations
-Lucky Rai, Asst. Director of Membership Services
-Alie Koch, Rental & Scheduling Manager
-Graham Johnson, Youth Hockey Manager
It was decided that there will no longer be ADM sessions for players in the Midget and Bantam age divisions. Ice time requirements set forth by the ADM will still be met, but coaching will be left up to the individual coaches. The coaches will be responsible for the skill development of their team. Bantams and Midget aged teams will receive more full ice/shared ice touches. Squirt and Pee Wees will still follow a similar structure in their development because these age groups have similar needs in their advancement.
These changes will be implemented in the next few weeks.
